Chapter 64: Chapter 64: Go Out More
The rain doesn’t seem like it will stop anytime soon, so Su Meixi decided to go into the supermarket to buy something to fill her stomach.
She picked a boxed meal in the prepared food section, asked the staff member to heat it up, and then took it to a small dining table to eat.
While she was eating, a staff member came by and saw her. The staff member was a woman in her forties who, upon seeing Su Meixi, asked enthusiastically, “Hey, why are you eating here today? Isn’t your husband cooking for you?”
Su Meixi paused for a moment.
The woman chuckled and said, “Your husband, he used to come to our supermarket every day to buy groceries. Everyone here recognizes him. He’s tall and handsome, and so considerate. He said you liked ribs, and sometimes he’d even ask us to save the freshest ribs for him.”
Su Meixi forced a smile and then her eyes involuntarily reddened.
The woman continued, “You have no idea how much we all envy you. But it seems like he hasn’t been around for a while.”
Su Meixi quickly said, “He’s on a business trip.”
“No wonder. But our boxed meals are delicious too; you should give them a try,” the woman said before she hustled off to attend to other matters.
Su Meixi, however, had lost her appetite.
She had always thought that Gu Wei approached her just for sex, but if that’s all he wanted, why would he bother doing all those things?
He clearly wanted to share a life with her.
Her tears fell again.
Ah, just forget it, she thought, perhaps she and he were not meant to be after all.
Since they were going to divorce, they might as well be done with it.
Thinking of divorce, she suddenly remembered that she and Gu Wei hadn’t gotten their divorce certificate yet.
But with his kind of family background, a divorce didn’t require his presence, right? His mother was so powerful, surely just a word from her and someone would take care of the divorce certificate for them.
…
That’s how Su Meixi drifted through the following days.
Even though she tried hard to adjust, she still made silly mistakes from time to time, like using toothpaste as facial cleanser. And sometimes, if someone patted her back from behind, she would subconsciously use the self-defense techniques Gu Wei taught her.
Once, Li Pingping patted her from behind and got thrown over Su Meixi’s shoulder. Li Pingping immediately complained to Mr. Wang.
But Su Meixi could only explain that it was a misunderstanding, though sadly no one believed her.
Of course, everyone knew she was heartbroken, and it’s common for a woman who has just lost love to act out of the ordinary. Mr. Wang only scolded Su Meixi lightly.
However, Mr. Wang was also concerned that Su Meixi’s state of mind might affect her job, so he said to her, “Su Meixi, you can’t just work all the time; you need to participate in more activities.”
“Activities?” Su Meixi asked, puzzled.
Mr. Wang asked, “Don’t you have any friends? Class reunions, anything, are better than just going to work and then home. You’ll get depressed.”
Su Meixi understood.
Mr. Wang wanted her to distract herself. As long as she socialized more, she wouldn’t constantly be thinking of Gu Wei.
That day after work, she happened to run into Bi Yuanhang who was also finishing up for the day.
Bi Yuanhang hadn’t bothered her recently. Given that they lived in the same building, it was normal that they would occasionally run into each other, so Su Meixi didn’t think too much of it.
Bi Yuanhang greeted her, “Xiao Xi, you just finished work too?”
Su Meixi nodded.
“Have you eaten? I bought some groceries; do you want to join me for dinner?”
Su Meixi shook her head, “No thanks, I’ve bought some groceries myself.”
“Okay then, I’ll be heading off first,” said Bi Yuanhang.
Su Meixi stopped him, “Um… didn’t you say you were going to a wedding?”
Bi Yuanhang’s eyes lit up, “You want to go?”
“Where is it being held?”
Bi Yuanhang replied, “How about I add you on WeChat? I can send you the location and the wedding agenda, so you can take a closer look.”
Su Meixi didn’t think too much about it.
Actually, when she was in Guang City, Bi Yuanhang had requested to add her, but she didn’t accept.
Now, she simply regarded Bi Yuanhang as an ordinary neighbor, so adding him on WeChat was no big deal.
After adding Su Meixi on WeChat, Bi Yuanhang casually said, “I’ll send it to you when I get home, I’m going back to cook now.”
Su Meixi nodded, and they each went their separate ways.
…
On the day of blue sky, Bi Yuanhang messaged Su Meixi, asking if she wanted to go together.
Su Meixi said no, she would go on her own.
Bi Yuanhang stared at Su Meixi’s message for a while, lost in thought.
It still wasn’t the right time; he had to continue waiting.
Su Meixi took a taxi to blue sky’s wedding.
The wedding was held on a large lawn, a popular spot in Feng City for Western-style weddings.
From afar, Su Meixi saw a couple standing underneath a heart-shaped arrangement of balloons and flowers. For some reason, tears streamed down her face.
She regretted coming.
She was someone who had been married, yet had no wedding. She didn’t know if she would ever get the chance in her lifetime.
Su Meixi turned around, intending to leave.
However, several people at the scene recognized her.
“Isn’t that the beautiful Su Meixi? You actually came?”
“Su Meixi, why don’t you come over? Since you’re here already.”
A female classmate from the next class, Yanzi, came over to pull her.
Yanzi said, “We were just talking about you a few days ago, saying you’re working back in Feng City now. Why don’t you ever come to our gatherings?”
Su Meixi replied, “I often have to work on weekends and during the winter break. It conflicts with your gatherings.”
“You must have social anxiety, right? Even back at school you didn’t talk much. Now that you’re in society, you must be sociable. Besides, we’re all classmates; there’s no backstabbing here, so feel free to have fun.”
Yanzi pulled Su Meixi over.
In no time, she was surrounded by about a dozen classmates. Some looked very familiar with little change since their school days, while a few had changed so much that it took her a while to recognize them.
But no matter whether they were male or female, they were all warm to her, asking how she was doing with genuine concern.
After a little while, someone else shouted, “Look, Bi Yuanhang, our senior brother, he’s here too!”
