Elweed Willis
Nickname (Elle by Alsfira Medis)
Alsfira Medis
Nickname (Fii by Elweed Willis)
「I’m retiring.」
「….Yeah.」
I was called into the principal’s office and I had a choice to make.
Divine Records 1994. I’ll be graduating from the Canovarian Alchemy School in March this year. It seems we need to talk about that graduation path.
The person in front of me is the headmaster of this academy and my homeroom teacher.
Her name is Alsfira Medis. The Medis family has produced many famous alchemists, and they are the most prestigious of the prestigious families. Among them, Arsufira seems to be extremely talented and has already been in charge of this academy in her late twenties. She seems to be an exceptional case.
She a beautiful woman with long blonde hair and, well, she’s not bad to look at. Her personality tho is kind of nagging and annoying.
And why am I being called out by this woman?
It seems that the reason is that she doesn’t like the graduation path i decided on.
「Hey… you really need to reconsider, your path is selective! You could be a knight of the kingdom, you could be an alchemist who works directly for the royal family, and between you and me… you could be married to the third princess… come on, take your pick of any of those!」
「Retired, Alchemist. Here’s my badge. I’ll give it back.」
「Stooop!!!!」
I tossing out the badge in a Texan way. These are ranks for alchemists, and there are tiers of ranging, from Copper Grade, Silver Grade, Gold Grade, Platinum Grade, and Blue Stellar Grade.
I took that highest rank, Blue Stellar Grade, within a year of entering the school.
The badge on my chest changed for each rank, and the current badge on my chest is a blue stellar grade badge. But this kind of thing doesn’t matter to me, a retired alchemist. That’s why I threw it on this woman’s desk.
「I’m graduating, okay. I’ll at least my name on the form.」
「…What are you going to do now that your retired?」
「Huh? Of course I’m going to take over my family’s farm, right? We’ve done a lot of animal breeding this year. And I also succeeded in developing a new method of self-sustaining bipedal walking vegetables. Honestly, this was harder than writing my thesis… but I don’t want to mass-produce them since they’re completely pet-like. I’ll feel sorry for them and they get eaten. I’d like to utilize that technique in more different areas.」
Yes, the corn I created walks.
A Fully self-sustaining corn. It’s a wonderful thing that can communicate somewhat. It has low intelligence, but I’m applying and incorporating research on fully independent artificial intelligence. Well, that said, it’s not a good idea to have intelligence inhabiting vegetables, so I won’t be doing that in the future…. I tried it as an experiment and it was an accidental success. From now on, I hope i can use my research on fully independent artificial intelligence in other areas a bit more. I’d like to think a bit more carefully about the agricultural products, but I’d like to continue research on fully independent artificial intelligence for future plans.
「Ohhh…. Stop it….. You really need to put your genius skills to work somewhere else. I don’t wanna be a farmer…. but I’m interested in this walking corn… Hahahaha. My thesis could have been more practical and amazing….」
「Fully independent artificial intelligence research? Surprising, huh?」
「Well you are the youngest person in history to become a Blue Stellar Class, and the whole world is going to be surprised that your thesis can be attributed entirely to crops… hahahahaha… hey, don’t you think you should rethink this?」
「No i’m still retiring. But, I’ll still continue to use alchemy because it’s useful, but I don’t want to be an alchemist. It’s too restrictive and troublesome. I don’t care if I’m the youngest ever Blue Stellar Class. Because that has nothing to do with farmers, right? You’ll all be glad I’m not an alchemist anymore. It’s one less post to fill. It’s a true win-win. Don’t you think so too, Fii.」
「Stop calling me “Fii”. Call me Medis-sensei or master (shishō)…. But you’re a Blue Stellar …. You….. You know you’re better than me….」
「Uh…..I’m sorry.」
I’m the second alchemist in the kingdom who has reached the Blue Stellar. The first one is the founder of alchemy. It’s not just that he created a class and made himself the highest-ranking Blue Stellar class, so it was apparently offensive that someone else would be in that class.
But in recognition of my work on fully independent artificial intelligence, as part of my “Cornish Miracle Project,” I became the second Blue Stellar in history.
By the way, they couldn’t evaluate my research properly, but they made me a Blue Stellar after seeing the part about a complete artificial intelligence being completed as a result of an unintelligible process. In other words, none of the alchemists currently in existence can understand my theory. Even if I say so myself, it seems that I’m the greatest genius in history.
That’s why I can understand why that Fii wants me to be a foil for her. I suppose there are many reasons for this, such as socializing with royalty and nobles.
( i don’t know what foil means in this sentense)
But I have a dream. I have a dream to sell my fruits and vegetables to the whole world. I couldn’t do it with my father’s generation, but maybe I can. That’s why I studied alchemy.
「Haa…. Haa….. When I found out that your goal was really to sell fruits and vegetables to the world, I was in despair for the first time in my life… Seriously.」
「I’m sorry. But I want to fulfill an old dream of mine.」
「I know….. As a teacher, i should respect my student’s dreams… but the name Elweed Willis is already too famous. But every graduate of this school has gone on to work for very famous company’s. And to think the best alchemist in history’s graduation path is to become a farmer and take over a farm house」
Actually, this question and answer. Has already been repeated for more than 10 times.
But its already one month before graduation. This woman, the principal, is seriously getting impatient.
Does she really want me to get a good job? But i already decided to devote myself to farming, but….
「How hard would it be on Fii if I took over the farm?」
「Mu, your finaly listening to me.」
「You’re so persistent, you know that? I’m about to graduate soon, and I thought we could at least talk…. But I’ll definitely sell you some walking corn.」
「Well, that’s all well and good, but I’ve been hearing about your career path for a long time now. Not only from the nobility, but from royalty as well. Marrying a princess makes you a royal, even if you are adopted in as a son-in-law. I’ve been out of the norm from the time I came to school until now, but to think you can become royalty….」
「But as a farmer, I have a duty to…」
「Yeah. I’ve been talking about it with your family. But all your family and relatives say you’re not cut out to be a farmer. Your parents really want you to follow the path of an Blue Stellar alchemist…」
「I know my family and relatives are against me becoming a farmer. but when I graduate, I’m going to go out on my own and build my own workshop. And I’m on a mission to become the best farmer in history there.」
「…and alchemy is the means to that end, right?」
「Yeah. We talked about this when I first got here, didn’t we?」
「I didn’t think that a genius who scored a perfect score in all subjects and even a perfect practical exam would say anything like that….」
「…hmm.」
Fii’s has had a lot of dark circles under her eyes lately. Her hair is frayed and shaggy, even though she’s beautiful. she looks very tired.
「Fee, is it my fault that your tired?」
「Well, if I may say so. Before you were recognized, I was considered the greatest genius of all time, right? I became the youngest alchemist ever to become a platinum grade alchemist, and that’s how I graduated and got to where I am now… I know it’s been hard, but…. The hardest thing in my life has been your career path… It’s hard…. Really hard. I get calls every day, you know? Where do you think this is going? I get calls every day from nobles, knights, and royalty. I’m….. I’m gonna die of exhaustion. Ha-ha-ha-ha-ha…..」
The expression on Fii’s face as she stared blankly into the void was awful. I’m not sure how to describe it, but I can only say that it was bad.
Well, I guess I should find a compromise here. She’s always been good to me and always been helping me out.
「….Maybe, i can postpone my retirement.」
「….Really!!? You’re postponing it!? You promise!?」
「Yeah. But I have a condition.」
「Gokuri. What’s that?」
(Litteral ゴクリ。それは?)
「I’ll be a freelancer」
「Ah, I see. So you’re saying it your focusing on your own research and do other work in your free time?」
「The truth is, I can live on the royalties from my recently finished textbook on alchemy, and I have other patents, so I’m not strapped for money, but I don’t mind devoting some of my time to a job that uses alchemy. I might have a great idea in mind. Even with the walking corn, I had a flash of inspiration when I didn’t expect it. I’m beginning to think it’s important to keep in touch with the outside world… what do you think?」
「Uuuuuuuu, Thank you very much. Elle really is a good boy. I’ll give you anything you want in return. You don’t want money or anything, then will you marry me? I can give you the right to marry me at this very moment, can’t I?」
「Nope, no need.」
「Uwaaaaa! I don’t have a man to go along with me….waaaaa! Even if I go on a blind date, everyone pulls away…..uwaaa!」
「Well, good luck with that, Fii. Good luck.」
「….yeah. I think I’ll have a good night’s sleep after today. It’s been a pleasure, thank you, Master Elle.」
Then Fee comes over to me and clasps her hands together in worship.
「Don’t do that, it’s disgusting. So, you’ve got a list, right? Let me choose now」
「Yeah, yeah. The only thing in here that can be freelance work is….」
And so Fii draws a line on the paperwork. Perhaps she’s drawing a diagonal line for jobs that can’t be freelanced.
「Yes. You can choose from one of these.」
The options that were handed to me were numerous.
「The job I want to do in this case is….」
After a quick glance at the list, I quickly decided.
「All right, I’ll take this one.」
Fii’s eyes widened as I pointed.
「I know you can’t do this, but…. That’s all right. It’s probably the best news of the year in the alchemist industry.」
「Well I’ll try to make it work.」
The Job that I chose.
Was to be a part time teacher at this school
This is how my life as a teacher was about to begin.
